Singletrack

Valley Spur Recreation Area (VSRA, Geospatial PDF) The 13 mile loop was finished in the finished in the fall of 2020. An additional 8 miles was completed in 2022.

Check it out! Outside Online highlights Valley Spur during the first minute of a video shot there in 2017.

Looking for a fast paced flowy singletrack? You can find it at Valley Spur Recreation Area of the Hiawatha National Forest (located ~ 6 miles from Munising on M94). The singletrack begins from the parking lot and traverses the hills famous for cross country skiing, crossing multiple two tracks (ski trails) along the way. The lack of large roots or rocks creates a family friendly riding experience. For those looking to push a serious pace and test the limits of their tires, get ready for miles of fun with plenty of berms and rollers that'll make you smile with a few short punchy climbs to keep you on your toes . Shorter routes can be created by combining sections of single-track and two track trails. New signage will be posted to differentiate the loops and trail segments

Valley Spur Trails are operated under Special Use permit between the Noquemanon Trail Network and the US Forest Service. MBTN is a partner in providing year-round recreation at Valley Spur by building and maintaining the single track system at Valley Spur.

Updated: 9/12/22. Bike Trail 2 is named “Hemlock Valley”

Munising Mountain Bike Park Non-Motorized Trails (hiking & biking) Munising’s premier trail system is located on the west end of Munising just before the Hillside Party Store (across from the baseball field), within riding distance of downtown. This newly built trailhead includes a bike repair station, picnic area, trail kiosk and pit toilet. Locals dub these trails a mountain bike playground. At the top of the hill you will find a jump trail (Superior Air!), rock armored trail (Rock On!), skills park (Da Play Zone), pump track (Pump U.P. da Jam), and a technical trail (Zach's Zip) to be expanded and reworked into a drop line - October 2024. Encompassing the bike park is an outer cross-country flow trail (Munising Bay Loop, aka MBL). Linking these epic trails and the parking lot is the 1.5-mile ADA accessible Gateway Loop, about half way down the return to the parking lot an optional singletrack trail (Mountain Goat) will take you along the top of the hill surrounding Munising ending at the football field. Approximately halfway across Mountain Goat trail is an optional downhill flow trail (Flow & Steady). Flow & Steady is 1mile and will bring riders back to the M28 trailhead.

Robert McQuisten Munising Township Recreational Area, Alger County tot track

The Wetmore Tot Track Located in the wooded area between the boardwalk and the ball field is a1/2 mile easy loop constructed by local volunteers to offer a place for young or beginner riders to experience singletrack trail riding.  The loop offers short climbs, and tight turns making it a great place to master mountain biking skills. Picnic tables, grills, and several other park amenities (playground, basketball hoops, baseball field, and a volleyball pit) are close by making it a great place to spend the day with the family. Currently in progress is a connector route (Pine Line) that will link the Munising Township Recreation Area to the Valley Spur Recreation Area (expected completion by the end of the 2024 build season). 6 of 10 miles are complete to date.

Bruno’s Run Hiking/Mountain Biking Trail (Geospatial PDF) is considered by many to be the area’s premier mountain biking experience, with a 10 mile loop, offering outstanding scenery, including small lakes and streams along the trail, with a variety of trees and other plants. It is located down Forest Highway 13 (~10 miles south of M28 from Wetmore) with trailheads at Moccasin Lake Rest Area, Pete’s Lake Day Use Area and Widewaters Campground.

Grand Island (Geospatial PDF) provides a combination of rugged dirt/sand trails and easier gravel roads that will accommodate any level of biker or hiker. For example, a family planning a day of biking can arrive on the early boat, take a leisurely pace and travel partway up the west rim trail, cut across the island on an old logging road to Trout Bay Overlook, travel down to Trout Bay day use area for a picnic and beach walk, and finish the day biking down along Murray Bay to Williams Landing in time to return to the mainland. More advanced, energetic cyclists can mountain bike the 20-mile main island perimeter route in four to six hours, with time for brief stops and some exploration. Bicycling off roads and trails is not allowed because it damages fragile vegetation.

If you don't have a bike with you, no problem! The Grand Island Ferry Service rents mountain bikes right at William's Landing. For more information about bike rentals or ferry schedules, please call (906) 387-2600. If you are traveling to and from the island on the passenger ferry, keep the ferry schedule in mind as you plan your time on the island. Consider your level of fitness and your pace as you make route choices.

winter biking - Groomed Snow Route

May 2024 -

We had an unprecedented winter this year with record low snowfall and cyclical temps. We were able to groom and maintain two routes. One is located at the upper trailhead of Valley Spur (~3 mile loop). The other is located in Wetmore on the existing pine line trail (about 6 miles one way). Looking forward to route expansion for the 2024-25 season.

Signage out on the route

Hike Only:

The North Country Trail has several segments in Alger County which includes the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Valley Spur Recreation Area is a trailhead for the NCT and has a segment that leaves directly across from this parking lot that makes its way to Rock River with several road crossings along the way. It is a beautiful section of trail. Make sure to have bug spray handy this time of the year.:)

ENJOY!!!!
